Leaders and Attributes of Leadership – Think and Grow Rich

Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich” states, “It is no disgrace to be a follower. On the other hand, it is no credit to remain a follower. Most great leaders began in the capacity of followers”. In this article we will be discussing leaders and reviewing the major attributes of leadership.

Everyone who decides to take the leap and join a particular company does so with the best of intentions. I talk to people in this business and other businesses who use terms like, want and wish. While these terms are again meant with the best intentions, they will always leave you with more want and wishes. It is very easy to use terms like this because if something doesn’t go your way or you are met with a road block you can simply justify it to yourself and others by saying it was just a wish. I’ve got news for you…wishes come true when you make them come true.

The experience gained by an intelligent follower from a knowledgeable leader is priceless. What are the major attributes of a leader? Unwavering courage based upon their confidence in themselves and their occupation. Self-control which enables them to set the example that their intelligent followers will emulate. Justice in their judgments and the ability to be fair-minded. Definiteness of decision based on their self-assurance. Definiteness of plans to ensure that they and their followers stay on course. Willingness to do more than they ask of their followers regardless of compensation. Personality that naturally commands the respect of their followers. Sympathy and understanding when their followers encounter problems. Attentiveness to details. Willingness to assume responsibility for mistakes stemming from their follower’s incompetence. Spirit of cooperation with their followers resulting in a cooperative effort by all. . Napoleon Hill categorized leadership as either by consent, or by force. As the two categories indicate, followers would either follow with or without their personal consent and sympathy.

Specialized knowledge as he defined it is, “knowledge of the service, merchandise or profession which you intend to offer in return for fortune”. Many examples are given in his text of this process, but the cases are all similar. There is a call for action, a demand for special knowledge and then an action to be taken. A simple illustration may explain it best. Often times we need to get from point A to point B in life. This process will require us to take action. In order to accomplished this we need to have or gain specific information, a specific skill, provide a service, etc. As we acquire and utilize these things we can begin to make the transition toward our goal.

A secondary result, he noted, will often occur at this point. An idea will be born with the addition of imagination to our specialized knowledge. It’s sort of like being in the right place at the right time and all the right things are in place. The birth of this idea is our moment of opportunity. It’s the seizing, or rather our seizing of the moment, that can lead to our fortune.

So look in the mirror. Do you have the Desire Napoleon Hill talks of in Think and Grow Rich? Or, do you daydream about new cars, toys and paying your bills? Make this a must and it will give you all of your Dreams. I’d love to hear your thoughts about this. I hope this helps you on your Journey. Until next time, Happy Marketing!
